The Meehl House has developed several programs and opportunities for you to use as part of your recovery program. In developing these programs we have looked "outside the box" and at what other institutions are using to create programs and therapies that are enabling and empowering. Our programs are focused on helping residents develop and rediscover skills and tools in planning, coping, relaxation and enjoyment. They provide opportunity for social development and promote a general sense of psychological wellbeing.

Extensive flower bed areas cover the grounds of The Meehl House, in addition to a larger, more organized, garden area for growing vegetables and herbs. If you have a particular interest in a plant, let the staff know and ground can be set aside for you to plant on the grounds or in the garden area. Local Saturday Markets provide an excellent opportunity to sell plants and vegetables and earn a few extra dollars.
From a therapeutic standpoint, the positive stimulation and meditative calmness attained through the simple act of working with the earth are well founded and irrefutable. Our program promotes social, cognitive, psychological and general health. Self-esteem, socialization, positive sensory stimulation and practically all aspects of life are enhanced by working in the rich soil of the South. Residents work with plants in a variety of ways through
- Vegetable, flower and herb gardening
- Green house and indoor plant care
- Horticultural crafts
- Harvest and food preparation
The Art Barn, a creation in progress, offers residents an opportunity to work in several mediums: canvas, clay or wood. A growing wood shop shares barn space with a pottery wheel and kiln and provides cover for painting on a rainy day. Redevelop skills in patience and problem solving through expression in art. For the more dramatically inclined, local theaters are always looking for volunteers and thespians.
Begin the day with meditation and a few moments of centered thought. Relax and center yourself in the meditation room. A variety of tools are provided to help you discover the most therapeutic form of meditation for you to use in your recovery efforts.
By establishing relationships with business, The Meehl Foundation is spreading understanding of mental illness across the community. We will be actively cultivating new business who can benefit from utilizing the skills of our residents for part time or volunteer positions. Each successful placement is a win-win situation as most residents have the goal of employment, returning to school, giving them a role in the community.
Volunteerism plays an important role in resident's ability to reenter the workforce or pursue a new interest. Community service provides a safe environment for residents to understand how they are affected by deadlines and stress, responsibility and expectation, using the knowledge gained through volunteerism to help identify concerns and opportunity for reentering the workforce or discovering new possibilities.
topExercise plays a role in achieving mood stabilization, reducing depression and improving the quality of your life are well known and documented. Residents are encouraged to take a hike, walk a mile, lift some weights or throw some horseshoes. Residents are fifteen minutes from a walk on the beach or sunrise on the Gulf. The Meehl House provides a range of equipment and tools to help you develop an exercise/recreation program that benefits you and leads to a healthier lifestyle.
Family is at the core of all of The Meehl Houses efforts. The Meehl House provides a relaxing and peaceful environment for families to reconnect and reaffirm their commitment to each other. Retreat weekends provide an opportunity for families to jointly develop a plan of action for helping residents reenter society and the family unity and stay health and well.
Family Retreat Weekends encourage the development and healing of the family unit. Research shows the second component to successful recovery for mental illness is family support, followed only by medication compliance. There is no extra charge for families to visit on the weekends or for any family in our community with a mental illness to participate in these fellowship weekends filled with food, fun and activities.
